Reus City Council allocates a municipal plot to expand NEWART Centre with a new outdoor exhibition space

Reus City Council has made a municipal plot available to NEWART Foundation to enable the expansion of NEWART Centre in Reus with a new outdoor exhibition space. The initiative responds to the private foundation’s proposal to extend its current facilities into the area adjoining the existing building. It also reflects the council’s commitment to supporting a leading cultural venue in the city with an international profile in technological art.

The expansion project of the center foresees the creation of a new outdoor exhibition space aimed especially at technological art and the programming of interdisciplinary cultural activities, with the aim of complementing and reinforcing the artistic and cultural activity that the center currently develops.

The new space will have a multipurpose area to exhibit large technological works of art and host projections, performances and activities related to music, dance, theater, science and technology.

Likewise, the municipal collaboration will allow the creation of a cultural and social reference space for the city, with versatile uses and leisure open to citizens. Among the planned activities there are school visit programs, guided visits for sensitive groups, support actions for local artists and initiatives to energize artistic groups and cultural spaces of Reus.

This new space will also have a parking space for visitors to the center and equipped with charging points for electric vehicles; as well as a sustainable dry garden based on permaculture concepts and practices.

The transfer of the plot reserves a space for a possible future modular expansion of the NEWART Centre, adaptable to the needs and economic availability of the foundation.

On 20 February, the plenary session of Reus City Council approved the award to the foundation of a public-domain concession for the exclusive use of the municipal plots at 6 and 8 Regina Figuerola Rebull Street. The concession is granted free of charge for 50 years, with the possibility of an extension of up to 25 additional years.

With regard to the planned schedule, the works corresponding to the outdoor exhibition space and parking must be started within a maximum period of two years from the formalization of the concession and must be completed within a maximum of three years from the obtaining of the municipal works license.

In relation to the future building, the foundation will have a period of ten years to formally communicate to the City Council its will to develop this expansion. The works must be started within a maximum of eleven years from the formalization of the concession and finished within a maximum period of thirteen years.
