Krachtgever
About the artwork
A sound installation by Bosch & Simons exploring vibration and unstable balances.
Krachtgever (“Invigorator”) is a wall of stacked boxes linked by springs. Each stack carries a computer-controlled motor with eccentric weights whose speed is varied so that the imposed frequency interferes with the stack’s resonant frequency: a single box, or an entire column, can be set vibrating. Sound and movement shift almost imperceptibly from order to chaos. The first version was developed with the University of Twente and presented in 1993; the work received the Golden Nica at the Prix Ars Electronica in 1998.
Artistic career: Peter Bosch & Simone Simons
Artistic practice and research
Their autonomous music machines explore vibration, resonance and unstable balances. Using objects, motors and mechanical structures, they create installations in which sound and movement emerge through interactions between materials.
Bosch studied psychology at the universities of Leiden and Amsterdam and then sonology at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague; Simons trained in the audiovisual department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. They began with performances, concerts and theatre productions and, since 1990, have focused on building autonomous “music machines”. Their works include Was der Wind zum Klingen bringt (1990), shown at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and at Multimediale 2, ZKM; Cantan un Huevo, commissioned by the Ives Ensemble and awarded in Bourges in 2002; Aguas Vivas, which received a mention at VIDA 6.0 (2003); Bang Spring Time (2009) and Mirlitones (2012). In 2009 GRAME (Lyon) organised a retrospective of their work in La Tour-du-Pin.
