MACBA and NEWART Foundation launch a pioneering agreement to preserve and research digital and technological art

The agreement establishes a stable framework of collaboration to advance in the conservation, research and production of works linked to new technologies.

The Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) and NEWART Foundation have signed a collaboration agreement that represents a pioneering step in Catalonia in the preservation, research and production of digital and technological art. The agreement establishes a stable framework for joint work between the two institutions to address key challenges in conserving and developing contemporary artistic heritage based on digital technologies.

The agreement foresees the creation of a research group specialized in technological art, as well as the development of joint projects aimed at the conservation, restoration and technological updating of digital works. The lines of work also include issues related to digital obsolescence, one of the great challenges currently facing the preservation of contemporary art.

The agreement also provides for the exchange of scientific and technical expertise between MACBA and NEWART Foundation, as well as the possibility of launching shared calls and initiatives in research and artistic production. Another key aspect is the connection between NEWART Collection and the MACBA Collection, aimed at creating new synergies between a public institution of international standing and a foundation specialising in art and technology.

The agreement also aims to foster contemporary debate on the relationships between art, science and technology, as well as on new challenges linked to digital heritage and emerging artistic practices.

The manager of the NEWART Foundation, Àlex Rodríguez, stressed that "this agreement represents a very important step to consolidate a stable workspace between cultural institutions and agents specialized in art and technology. The preservation of digital art is one of the great cultural challenges of our time and this collaboration will generate knowledge, methodology and new projects with a vocation for the future."

For his part, the manager of MACBA, Eduard Vicente, explained that "this agreement represents an important step in collaboration with institutions in the territory in order to expand research networks and joint projects in relation to art and new technologies. The agreement provides a stable framework to carry out new forms of collaboration and the possibility of creating and disseminating joint knowledge."
