Artistic career: Jonas Englert
Artistic practice and research
Working across video, sculpture, diagram, text and sound, he explores memory, historical narratives and social relationships. He graduated from the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach in 2018. His practice examines how images and gestures contribute to collective experience.
He often works with archival footage to reread history as a sequence of gestures and encounters between people. At the HfG Offenbach he studied art with Heiner Blum, Rotraut Pape and Alexander Oppermann and philosophy with Juliane Rebentisch, and trained in applied theatre with Heiner Goebbels. He has exhibited at the Kunstmuseum Magdeburg, the Heussenstamm-Stiftung, the Frankfurter Kunstverein, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn; in 2025 he presented Simultaneities, his first solo show in Belgium, at Harlan Levey Projects, Brussels. His awards include the Frankfurter Künstlerhilfe Prize and the Marielies Schleicher Foundation Theory Prize. His work is in the collections of the Hirshhorn Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Kunstmuseum Magdeburg, and he has created work for the Nationaltheater Mannheim, the Staatsschauspiel Dresden and the Berliner Ensemble, among others.
