About the artwork
Perceptual constructs a mirror between the digital and analogue through a grid of solar LCD units. Patterns of flickering and pixelation generate an image in constant flux. The work connects impermanence and possible feelings of estrangement with the visual attraction of its forms.
Artistic career: Hong SungChul
Career and projects
Hong SungChul studied sculpture at Hongik University in Seoul and integrated media at the California Institute of the Arts. His sculptural constructions combine images and physical supports to alter the perception of surfaces. In his elastic-string works, photographs appear complete at a distance and fragment as viewers approach. Hands, arms and gestures of contact invite renewed attention to intimacy, communication and everyday experience. He has exhibited across Asia, the United States and Europe.
