On Saturday 21 November at 7 pm, NEWART Centre livestreams Act III, the multimedia performance by artist duo Operator (Ania Catherine and Dejha Ti), presented by the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
Act III is the third and final act of Human Unreadable, the project Operator began in 2022 by asking how much of a body survives translation into code and absorption into technological systems. The 80-minute performance is presented as part of the exhibition artport: A History of Internet Art. It moves between computational choreography and spoken narrative, like theatre aware of its own construction.
For Human Unreadable, Operator built a library of dance movements and an algorithmic method that generates choreographic sequences stored on the Ethereum blockchain. In Act I (May 2023), these choreographies were hidden within 400 generative visual compositions. In Act II (November 2023), collectors could uncover them as choreographic scores and make them public. In Act III, the first hundred scores become the raw material for the performance: dancers embody the choreography, bringing generative art out of the screen and back into the body.
A simultaneous livestream across ten institutions
NEWART Centre is one of ten international institutions livestreaming the 21 November performance at the same time. The others are Haus der Kunst (Munich), LACMA (Los Angeles), NODE Foundation (Palo Alto), Nxt Museum (Amsterdam), OGR Torino (Turin), Onassis Ready (Athens), Palazzo Diedo Berggruen (Venice), PHI (Montreal) and SOLO Contemporary (Madrid). The livestream is itself a work of broadcast art: a live-mixed transmission, edited in real time across multiple perspectives and unique to each performance.
