About the artwork

Morpho Tower develops ferrofluid sculpture using an electromagnet with a helically shaped iron core. As the magnetic field increases, the liquid forms spikes that rise and rotate around the tower. Adjusting the electromagnet’s strength dynamically controls these movements. Without a magnetic field, the structure appears as a spiral; when activated, a changing surface of spikes and waves emerges. The tower and fluid turn invisible forces into a visible sculptural experience.

About the artwork

A pioneering ferrofluid work developed by Sachiko Kodama with Minako Takeno. Magnetic fields transform the liquid into changing shapes.

Artistic career: Sachiko Kodama

Career and projects

Sachiko Kodama investigates ferrofluids: liquids containing metallic particles that respond to magnetic fields. Using computer systems, she controls their movement to create physical sculptures whose appearance recalls digital imagery. Protrude, Flow, Pulsate, Breathing Chaos and Morpho Tower develop this research into sound, light and matter. Her work has appeared in exhibitions including Machines and Souls at the Reina Sofía Museum and Digital Creatures in Rome.

Her practice demonstrates how scientific research can expand sculpture’s expressive possibilities.
