Albert Barqué-Duran and Marc Marzenit, Vestibular_1
Ars Electronica has invited NEWART Foundation to present one of its most emblematic works, Vestibular_1 by Albert Barqué-Duran and Marc Marzenit, in collaboration with the Institut Ramon Llull, at its forthcoming September 2024 edition. Ars Electronica is the major annual gathering for technological art, bringing more than 100,000 professionals from around the world to Linz.
Vestibular_1 is an immersive audiovisual installation that induces illusory sensations of
own movement in complete darkness when altering vestibular functioning. This is achieved
through powerful patterns of light and sound that persist in the retina and the auditory system in
the darkness. The work explores the role of vestibular signals in the perception of the body and the world, and their impact on aesthetic preferences.
This project was produced in the midst of the 2020 pandemic thanks to an outstanding international collaboration between artistic and research institutions; an example that not only fostered cutting-edge creative expressions, but also highlighted the resilience and unity of humanity in overcoming together unprecedented challenges.
